In the 1930s, Germany wanted to improve the mobility and mechanization of its army. An important part of this development program was the adoption of a standard military chassis to increase land mobility. Several versions were proposed, but the medium-sized off-road four-wheel-drive passenger cars manufactured by Opelwerk and Auto Union were chosen. These vehicles were used by the Wehrmacht for various military purposes, such as troop transport, tractor and reconnaissance. The Kfz. 12, produced by Horch (part of the Auto Union group along with Wanderer, Audi and DKW), proved extremely reliable and strong thanks to its simple and effective design, suitable for any environment in which it was used.
