In the 1970s, an innovative Main Battle Tank was created to meet the needs of the West German Army and replace the older Leopard 1. With a powerful 120 mm cannon and a V-12 twin-turbo diesel engine that allows it to reach speeds of up to 68 mph, this tank entered service in 1979. Due to continuous technological improvements in armament and armor, to this day the Leopard 2 is considered one of the world’s best Main Battle Tanks. The more recent version, the Leopard 2 A6, has received significant upgrades with a 120 mm Rheinmetall L/55 smoothbore gun and advanced third-generation composite protection. The turret shape and mantle profiles are specifically designed to minimize the impact of enemy attacks and anti-tank weapons.
