The introduction of the Macchi MC 202 Folgore was an important milestone for the Italian Regia Aeronautica. Thanks to a stylish design and powerful German DB 601 engine, produced under license by Italy, the fighter pilots of the Regia Aeronautica had a formidable fighter at their disposal. With its impressive engine performance, the MC 202 could actively attack Allied aircraft while combining maneuverability and speed (with a top speed of 600 km/h). Compared to earlier models such as the Fiat G-50 and the Macchi Mc-200, which had radial engines, the MC 202 far surpassed them. Originally armed with two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns in the nose, the arsenal was later expanded with additional machine guns in the wings.
