Early in World War II, the U.S. Army had reconnaissance vehicles with light armor and armament called “reconnaissance cars.” The development of the M-8 Greyhound armored car during the war marked a major development for the U.S. Army, with improved protection and heavier armament for advanced reconnaissance missions. The vehicle offered more flexibility in operations and could be used more effectively in support of ground troops thanks to the 37mm cannon in the gun turret. It made its debut on the Italian front, from Monte Cassino to Anzio, and later participated in D-Day operations in June 1944. Despite the challenging conditions in Normandy during the early phases of the operation, where the M-8 demonstrated its versatility and speed, the vehicle was later highly valued for its ability to move quickly and be flexibly deployed. The M-20 variant was developed based on the M-8 for duties as a military police and command vehicle.
