Ugears Garland Stem Lab

The Ugears pendulum is a stylized educational model, an interactive study guide to the mechanism only to learn the essence and principles of operation. The pendulum is one of the basic and most reliable time measurement mechanisms. The operating principle is based on the constant amplitude oscillation of the model under the gravity (weight) and potential energy (tension force) of the rubber band. The rubber band drives the model’s mechanism and compensates for the kinetic energy loss of the pendulum. The device is animated by means of a gearbox with winding wheel.

The model has an armature rod that controls the frequency of oscillations and a weight, scope wheel, gearing, rubber band, ratchet and pawl that reduce operating error. The model has several ways of controlling the frequency of oscillations: the weight of the pendulum ”bob,” the vertical position of the weight on the pendulum and the tension of the rubber band.

The first study of the pendulum was conducted at the end of the 16th century by Galileo Galilei, an Italian engineer. He described the pendulum’s property of maintaining consistency of oscillations. The first person to use a pendulum in a mechanical clock and provide a constant speed was a Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens in the 17th century.

Pendulums are mainly used in mechanical clocks as part of a launch mechanism and the way to provide a constant speed. In the musical sphere, metronomes, with pendulums as their main constructive element, help musicians practice playing a regular tempo. Pendulums are also used in geological research, geophysics, sports and laboratory research in mechanics and physics.
