All you have to do is take the key out and put it in the keyhole and turn it a quarter turn. But, to get the key is only a small part of the puzzle, to get the gears moving you must unlock a mechanism before taking the key by turning the key a quarter turn the wrong way. When all the secrets are discovered and the UGears chest is open you will find a small place for jewelry, notes and other small things.
